Winter Hockey Culture
Overview
Every winter, the excitement of hockey returns to the Boundary region. Hockey has grown from many origins—skaters on frozen rivers, early communities competing for fun, and the daring spirit of those who played long before arenas existed. Today, hockey stands as a beloved tradition woven from countless beginnings.
Whether you’re watching a high-energy local game or joining a casual community league, the hockey season brings people together throughout the colder months.
Border Bruins
The Grand Forks Border Bruins are a Junior “A” ice hockey team competing in the Neil Murdoch Division of the KIJHL. Based in Grand Forks, they play at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. In 2021, the team moved to private ownership and is now operated by Dr. Mark Szynkaruk, a local physician.
Boundary Adult Hockey League
The Boundary Adult Hockey League (BAHL) in Grand Forks operates as a full draft league—meaning teams are completely reshuffled every season. No player knows which team they will join until the draft occurs in early September, creating an exciting and unpredictable season each year.
