Hiking
Hiking is proven to have many health benefits, ranging from physical exercise you get when out on the trail, to emotional or mental relief that comes from being in nature.
Cascade Falls
Cascade Falls is great area to explore. It is located just south of Christina Lake and slightly north of the Canada/USA border. This was one of the first locations to pioneer 3-phase 60-cycle alternating current generators and was operational until 1919. It was based on Nikola Tesla’s revolutionary model of alternating current. Some say this project finally settled a rivalry between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison on the AC/DC debate. Today you may still find some remnants of the old plant as you explore the beauty of this area.
The Kootenay’s great Mount Gladstone
The view from the top of Mount Gladstone is 360-degrees of magnificence and worth every uphill step! The trail starts out well defined but once you reach the 4.5km mark and above the tree line the only thing you are following are flags and cairns. Gladstone Provincial Park was identified for protection in the West Kootenay-Boundary Land-Use Plan. Trails in the backcountry areas of the park are unmarked and unmaintained. They may not meet BC Parks standards, but most are suitable for hiking and horseback riding. All trails are closed to motor vehicles including ATVs.
